The Adult Education Committee of Cong. Rinat Yisrael presents a Scholar in Residence

Prof. Daniel Schwartz, Professor of Jewish History, Hebrew University

Shabbat Parshat Vayikra, March 19-20, 2010

Prof. Schwartz will deliver three lectures

1. Drasha at the 9am minyan: "'Any man, but from among you' (Leviticus 1:2)-- On Universalism and Particularism"

2. Shabbat afternoon at 5:20pm: "Priestly Religion and Rabbinic Religion"

3. After mincha, which is scheduled for 6:35pm:" From Joseph b. Matityahu of Jerusalem to Flavius Josephus of Rome: A Judaean becomes a Jew"

Professor Schwartz is among the most eminent historians of ancient Judaism. His research has focused on Jewish History and Historiography of the Second Temple period. After immigrating to Israel in 1971, he earned a PhD in Jewish History from the Hebrew University, where he became a Full Professor in 1995.

He has been a Visiting Professor at Yale, the University of Basel, NYU, JTS and Queens College. He received the 2005 Yad Yitzchak ben Zvi Prize for his work on Second Maccabees.
