The Adult Education Committee of Congregation Rinat Yisrael Proudly Presents: An exciting and timely lecture by Rabbi Yehuda Sarna

University Chaplain and Rabbi, Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life at NYU

Sunday, January 31, 2010 at 8:00pm

Topic: Orthodoxy and the New College Experience

A new moment in the traditional college experience has led to opportunities and dangers for Orthodox Jewish students in residential secular college campuses. How do the current religious, political and social trends affect a family’s decision on where a child goes to college? What are the common struggles or milestones parents can expect over the course of their child’s college career? What are the resources parents and students should seek out? Are recent developments ultimately beneficial for the Orthodox Jewish community at large?

Rabbi Yehuda Sarna currently serves as the University Chaplain and Rabbi at the Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life at New York University.  Rabbi and Michelle Sarna together serve as Educators for the Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus, a program of the Orthodox Union. Since Rabbi Sarna joined the Bronfman Center in 2002, the Orthodox community has tripled in size, becoming the largest such community at any private university. Rabbi Sarna founded the Jewish Learning Fellowship, which offers ten-week courses on Jewish thought for students without a yeshiva background, enrolling 200 such students a year.

Rabbi Sarna was awarded the Richard M. Joel Exemplar of Excellence award from Hillel International in 2008, and was listed as one of “36-under-36 Changemakers” by the Jewish Week in 2009.
